Power-to-X is a key to decarbonization

Power-to-X (P2X) means converting electrical power into something else. Combining all available options for the effective and flexible use of surplus power from renewable energies. Energy systems are designed to generate power when it is needed. With increased production of renewable energies such as solar and wind, there will often occur situations where we generate more power than what we need. This situation will increase the demand for energy storage making the Power-to-X process a way of converting this energy into something else ( gas, synthetic fuel, mobility, etc).

Why Power-to-X?

Power-to-X is a key to decarbonization. The world urgently needs an effective, efficient, and long-term method to reduce carbon emissions. We believe that hydrogen and synthetic fuels derived from renewable energy using Power-to-X technology will be a vital part of achieving climate goals. We believe that Power-to-X will become a key to the power systems of the future and an important part of the energy transition.

Experts believe that Power-to-X is the next industrial revolution. Implementation of P2X technology and products will further enable the integration of renewable power into other energy-consuming sectors that contribute greatly to the world economy (such as transportation, manufacturing, chemicals, agriculture, etc) effectively shifting the requirement of fossil fuels.


What is the X?

The X can refer to any of the following: Power-to-fuel, Power-to-gas, Power-to-power, Power-to-chemicals, Power-to-Hydrogen, Power-to-ammonia, Power-to-methane, Power-to-mobility or Power-to-Heat.


The core of Power-to-X: Hydrogen

At the core of renewable P2X technologies is electrolysis. Using electrolyzers, electricity from renewable energy sources such as wind or solar can be converted into “green” hydrogen. With the help of Power-to-X technology, this hydrogen can then be further converted and used in secondary conversion processes such as methanation, hydrogenation, and Fischer–Tropsch to generate a range of hydrocarbon products as well as in the Haber–Bosch process to generate ammonia.
